Despite what “enthusiasts” bitch and moan about.

Kinja'd!!!

This is a truck that’s been sitting on the lot of a local Ford dealer for about 9 months now. It’s an absolute base F150 XL, single cab/long bed, with the 3.3 NA V6 and RWD. It’s currently advertised as just under 27k dollars. The dealer also has one identical to it but it white, which has also been sitting for about 9-10 months. Next time someone complains that there aren’t any cheap honest trucks left remind them that nobody is actually wants them anymore. Otherwise this thing wouldn’t have been sitting for so long.

If I needed a bare bones truck for the occasional truck use and daily driving otherwise, I would get a Ranger XL for the same price considering we’re going by MSRP. The equipment is roughly the same, but you get the added benefit of either a SuperCab or SuperCrew configuration, which opens it up to a larger market. If you’re shopping in that price range, odds are the Ranger is the better truck unless you absolutely need the F150's 200 lb  towing capacity increase.

If we look at a Ranger XL SuperCrew with the towing package, it tows 7500 lbs, while a 3.55 F150 XL regular cab tows only 5100 lbs. The 3.73 steps it up to 7700 lbs, but the Ranger is still the sensible choice for most.

The base 1992 F-150 cost around $20,000 (in today’s money). That’s certainly a lot less than the $28,495 price for the base 2020 F-150.

However, you are getting a lot more for that extra money. 19/25 mpg instead 14/17. 575 mile range instead of 309. 290 horse power instead of 145. A whole shit ton of safety features:

Kinja'd!!!

And on top of that modern cars are undeniably better built, more reliable, and longer lasting than older vehicles.

Now you can argue you don’t want all that stuff, but it’s pretty clear that’s a niche that’s not worth serving, even fleet buyers don’t want to skip this stuff, and consumers almost uniformly want it.

The enthusiasts who want a basic manual truck probably also don’t want a base 2wd V6.

The people who can afford a $20k+ new vehicle often can’t make much use of a something with no back seat.

And the people who want a cheap but functional truck have a huge used market to choose from . (There are over 500 trucks for sale under $20k within 50 miles of me ).

So, that truck falls in the gaps between being affordable and being desirable to the people who could afford it.

You’re veiwing “enthusiasts” as a single group. We aren’t a single group. We are a collection of highly competitive (and occasionally overlapping) tribes.

For every model made for enthusiasts, there are numerous competing groups that bitch about it, if only to claim superiority in their own minds. That doesn’t mean that the model made for enthusiasts is a flop, there could be an active core in there eager to buy new and convince others to buy new too.

The few off us that do put our money where our mouth is don’t buy in the numbers to make a business case, see TourX and manual transmissions.

The TourX was a fairly weak attempt from a company that can’t escape from the “old people’s cars ” stigma.

Manual transmissions though...  There are plenty of people who say they want one, then buy the auto because “they have to drive in traffic”.  They’re not dead yet, but they are becoming more and more specialized.

We recently replaced our single cab trucks for double cab trucks. It’s much nicer, because A. You can carry more people and not have to take two trucks to a site and B. When not carrying more people, it provides a secure place for tools and meters that we couldn’t have before. I honestly couldn’t see myself owning a regular cab now, having the extra space comes in handy even in scenarios you normally don’t think of.

This. This is exactly the (well, the main ) hangup I have with stepping up to the current Colorado. The manual exists. But it’s only available with an engine and driveline I don’t want. If they’d throw a V8 in it I’d be able to overlook the lack of a manual easily, but with a V6 I don’t particularly like (in a truck, anyway) and an I4 diesel that I generally like the drive ability of but is lacking in the  power department, it’s a much tougher sell for me.

A 1992 F150 with the 300 I6 will be better built, more reliable, and last longer than this new truck ever thought to be.

No offense man, but the 3.3 is a dog , especially for someone who wants to do truck stuff. It may have an extra 150hp, but it only gains 25ft-lbs of torque, and it all comes in over 4k, not exactly a useful feature for towing/hauling. The inside of these trucks is garbage, like holy hell I’m sure Fisher Price could have made a better quality interior . Plus Ford isn’t exactly killing it with reliability these days.

I think the biggest problem is the 3.3. The 2.7 EcoBoost is a $1000 option that you can add even to the base XL standalone. I know people on the internet like to complain about the extra complexity of the turbos and potential repair costs down the line, but the little bit of extra power, ton of extra torque, and 3 or so MPG for $1k makes the 3.3 a hard sell - the only customers I can see buying something this base are the few fleets that don’t rack up enough miles to care about MPG and are worried about reliability... and most of those probably can  get by with a Ranger.

S o, I’m not some purist who thinks every truck should have a regular cab and an 8' bed.  The price of trucks has gotten completely out of hand though.  Automakers, unable to find a way to make a profit on cars, have chosen to jack the ever-loving shit out of truck prices to make up the difference.  The sticker price on trucks is obscene.

there is so much more stuff in even a base XL F-150 today that wasn’t in a Lariat F-150 from 20 years ago. and this is stuff that has to be there. a ‘99 had two airbags (driver and front passenger.) a 2019 regular cab has 7 airbags (driver, front passenger, left side curtain, right side curtain, left thorax seat integrated, right thor ax seat integrated, knee bolster) two pyrotechnic seatbelt pretensioners, and a complex restraints control module to activate them instead of just dumb impact sensors. There’s several hundred dollars added to the BOM right there.  Oh, and the body is another several hundred dollars more costly (aluminum.)

The problem is that the average new vehicle is just over $37 k when incomes have barely recovered from the financial crisis. Average prices are literally $10k more than they were 12 years ago, while the median income has  barely increased, meaning that is not at all cheap for most of the population.

This is what I’ve been pointing out in these comments. Plus incomes haven’t even risen after inflation in almost 20 years. Unless incomes triple, most cars are just ridiculously expensive. I’m not poor by any means, but even the price of the cars we’ve bought gives me pause. It’s nothing like when grandpa was dead center middle class, could buy new cars as a reasonable percentage of his single income, and still retire at 55 with a pension and over a million in the bank.

Thats the gist of it.  F150 deals aren’t hard to find, if you want to unload a base truck you had better make it worth the buyers time.
